How it went

An easy-graded walk, open to first-timers and families. We started in Keswick centre, traced the scenic road along Derwent Water before the climb up to Walla Crag — panoramic views over Derwent Water, Cat Bells and beyond, one of the best vantage points the Lakes has to offer. A pause at the top for snaps and a drink, then on to the ancient Castlerigg stone circle, and grub and drinks back in Keswick to finish.

The route

  1. Meet in Keswick town centre, 9am for a 9:30 start.
  2. Along the lakeshore road past Derwent Water and Friar's Crag.
  3. Up through Great Wood to Walla Crag.
  4. Summit stop — Derwent Water, Cat Bells, Skiddaw and Blencathra all in view.
  5. Across the fields to Castlerigg stone circle.
  6. Back down into Keswick for food and a drink.
